Why online Mysore? Why these Zoom practices?

Why online Mysore? Why these Zoom practices?

I have had a lot of people ask me that, and I really do have my answers, both as a teacher and as a student.

So why online Mysore and Zoom classes? As a student, the knowledge that someone is watching is huge! It keeps me on my mat and from picking up that little fur-tumbleweed that just went by … oh wait! Seriously though it is awfully hard to focus during your at home practice. Especially now more than ever, with all the other distractions in the world. It is very nice to have someone to keep you honest, even if that is a virtual presence. Also it gives you a sense of community and belonging. As we hole up at home, it is nice to see our friends even through a screen on their mats. It isn\’t like rolling out your mat right next to them, but it is still a feeling of togetherness and connection that I know I am craving. Sometimes I want a led class – I want to hear a new voice. And sometimes the voices in my head are just too loud and I want to know you are there with me. I know that we are both sharing the breath, and even though it is virtual, breathing together is a powerful experience.

I got to do a week Mysore practice with Tim Feldmann. And man, it was amazing. It was like a jolt of caffeine to my practice. Not only did he call me out on my issues, he did it with everyone listening. Wow. That is all I can say. Very eye opening. What exactly my issues are may be a topic for another day. But no lurking in the background in a Zoom Mysore room. No hiding. You are seen.

As a teacher, my answer is a little different. First, I am touched and humbled that you would invite me into your homes. I get to see a little slice of your life, your children and partners, and of course, your pets. I get to invite you into my little world as well. Second, I am clearly limited by camera angle. But I can also use that. I can focus on one thing that I can see very well, in a lot of different postures and not get distracted by other things. Perhaps I can really see the engagement of your legs (or not!). I also must use my words, clearly and directly. I cannot rely on touch or really even facial expression. I must decide what I want to convey and the best words to convey that message. I must be present. When teaching a live led class, you can always give a quick glance around the room if you get off track. You glance out the window for a second leading a Zoom class and you lose all focus.

I just wanted share some of my whys. I would love to hear yours! Or maybe some of my whys may help you say \”Why not?\”
